New Liquor Licensing Regulations Passed in Nova Scotia

Bar and restaurant owners and their patrons will benefit from new liquor licensing regulations as part of the Department of Environment and Labour's Competitiveness and Compliance Initiative.

The changes reduce the administrative burden and improve competitiveness for bar and restaurant owners, while ensuring continued consumer protection.

"The new regulations give bar and restaurant owners more options for beverage service and entertainment," said Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour. "Patrons will also benefit because the regulations encourage and foster responsible consumption."

Changes to the liquor licensing regulations include:

-- allowing patrons to bring commercially purchased wine to participating licensed eating establishments, and allowing the re-corking of wine bottles that patrons wish to bring home;

-- decreasing the amount of monthly paperwork sent to the alcohol and gaming division from licence holders;

-- allowing clubs, legions, volunteer fire departments and beverage rooms to remain open one hour longer;

-- eliminating the requirement for licensees to submit advertising material for approval; and

-- increasing flexibility for sampling of liquor products.

The new regulations come after regular discussions with the licensees about outdated and unnecessary administrative practices.

A liquor licensing discussion paper was released in November 2006 and the Department of Environment and Labour received more than 40 responses from licensees and the public.

The changes are consistent with Environment and Labour's Competitiveness and Compliance Initiative which reduces administrative burden and fosters competition, while improving compliance and public protection.
