2008 All Canadian Wine Championships

Atlantic Canada Wineries win medals at the 2008 All Canadian Wine Championships!

Atlantic Canadian wineries performed as expected in some categories at this, probably the most complete Canadian Wine Competition. They usually carry off medals in some of the hybrid categories, and sometimes in a fruit wine category.

In 2007, the news was a Silver Medal in the over $20 Riesling category, won by Gaspereau Vineyards, with winemaker and CAPS Sommelier Gina Haverstock attracting national media attention. This was news, simply because it was the first wine made from a well known vinifera grape from Nova Scotia to medal.

So what does she do for an encore? Well, this year the Riesling moved up to Gold, and other wines from Gaspereau, most of which she made, did well too, capturing 5 golds, a silver and a bronze medal.

Of note also this year is the emergence of recently opened L'Acadie Vineyards' wines, with Bruce Ewert, our winemaking instructor winning two golds, including a double gold (best in category) a gold, and a silver medal.

Here are the Atlantic Canada winners.

One can look at it this way, NS wines have now won medals in outside competitions, made from Vitis Amurensis, Vitis Vinifera, and hybrids of Vinifera/Riparia. Fine wine is made from all sorts of grapes, just like poor wine. Gaspereau's red hybrid blend (with that great Bordeaux-like nose) sums it all up with its name, just "Vitis".
