Sommelier Competition Information

Sommelier Competitions in Atlantic Canada

a. Critical Path:
i. National Competition: Montreal September 2006
ii. Regional Final Competition to be completed by end of June 2006
iii. Qualifying Rounds in each Region to be completed by end of May 2006

b. CAPS Ontario to send ASI Competition Rules to ASAP
i. Send by January 30, 2006 (also available on CAPS Ontario website)
ii. Each participant must be given a copy and acknowledge their understanding and agreement of the rules and guidelines

c. Qualifying Rounds (Semi Finals)
i. Open to all ASAP/CAPS members in good standing.
ii. cost of $35.00 to compete
iii. Organizers need to find a venue to hold the competition and source wines for the competition
iv. Includes written test and two blind wines for tasting/evaluation
v. Top four candidates advance to Regional Finals

d. Regional Finals (top four candidates)
i. Candidates should dress in proper work attire
ii. 5 Components
1. Closed door written theory examination
2. Wine list correction
3. Practical service examination (as per international rules)
4. Wine and food pairing exercise
5. Verbal blind wine and spirits tasting - public
iii. Jury to be composed of professionals from wine world (restaurants, hotels, food and wine journalists, etc.) and two representatives from CAPS including the competition director
iv. All decisions of the judging panel will be final and without appeal
v. The title of Best Atlantic Sommelier 2006 will be offered to the winner of the regional examination
vi. Winner will represent Atlantic Region at ASI/CAPS National Competition in Montreal (September 2006)

1. Atlantic or individual required to fund the expenses incurred for the winner to the National Finals (includes travel, hotel, and meals)
2. Atlantic must fund the travel expenses of the two CAPS members that will be attending the Atlantic Finals (the Ontario Director has offered to arrive a day early to assist the competitors in a dry run rehearsal

Nova Scotia Regional - May 7, 2006 at Seven Restaurant, 3 pm
New Brunswick/PEI Regional - May 8, 2006 at Moncton- Mavericks Restaurant
